Hello August!
It’s one of my favorite months; several really important people (to me) celebrate their birthdays in August. So if you are one of those, “Happy Birthday!”
And happy “first day of school” to all those special people in our lives starting in their school careers! I am celebrating with you!
This Saturday, August 3, at 11 am, Gloria Norris will showcase her new book, “Where The Light Gets In”. I am really looking forward to this meet and greet, and so excited for Gloria to get her book out!
Summer Reading 2024 is officially IN THE BOOKS! We had a great attendance, with over 80 people who participated in the Adult Summer Reading. Thanks to all who took part. We always give gift baskets and other prizes to participants. This year’s winners were:
Diane Estes, Jennifer Witt, and Katherine Keller. Congratulations to these winners, as well as to those who played in our “Where’s Bob?” contest. It was fun! (Don’t worry, Bob is still going to travel – watch for a chance to guess where he is on our Facebook page!)
Thanks to all the merchants who contributed to the prize baskets:
Crossfit Currahee, Scentsy, My Dude’s Donuts, Junior’s, Bulldog Carwash, Los Amigo’s, Sage St Bakery, Angel Oak Home, South State Bank, Walmart, Living Room Roasters and Troop’s.
We really appreciate all the generosity of our community!
We are very excited to be hosting Houston & Katie Vandergriff, the mother-and-son team behind Downs & Towns. Houston is a talented photographer who has won many awards, is a Nikon Creator Official Partner, and quite the globetrotter, having had his work featured in Venice, Rome, Lisbon, Paris, NYC, LA, Estonia, Scotland, and on Capital Hill. Together with his mom, Katie, Houston is helping to redefine outdated stereotypes surrounding disability. The Vandergriffs will be here August 19 at 6:00, and I hope you will come out and give them a great Toccoa welcome!
Remember, our Chess group meets every Monday at 11 am, and MahJongg meets Monday and Wednesday at 1:00pm
Chinese MahJongg Every other Saturday at 11:00am. Both groups are accepting new members, and if you don’t know how to play you are welcome to learn!
Our regular Book Club meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 1pm.
August- The Summer Book Club by Susan Mallory
September- The Mayor of Maxwell Street by Avery Cunningham
October – The Shining by Stephen King
November- The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith
December- Mr. Miracle and Mrs Miracle’s Kitchen by Debbie Macomber
We have a great little group and would love to see you there! And because we have a great group and because we love to read…we are starting a NEW book club! I’m calling this one our “Second Tuesday Book Club” and we will be reading classics. Starting in September, this group will meet at 4:00. These are the books for the rest of the year:
September 10 Fahrenheit 451- by Ray Bradbury
October 8 -Animal Farm by George Orwell
November 12 – The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
December 10- A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
You may have read these in school but they are worth a second look.
“Come re-read the classics @ your library!”
We are trying something new in conjunction with Georgia Cross Stitchers. We will be meeting August 9 at 3 pm to work on cross stitch projects. If you want to learn, I will teach you. If you have any other stitching project you would like to bring, you are welcome to join us.
We are planning our Brave Hearts Sensory Storytime August 27 at 4:00 PM. These are some folks who are near and dear to our hearts, and all are welcome!
I am currently reading A Summer Book Club, and I just finished Only Say Good Things by Crystal Hefner. It was a good read, a peek into the seediness behind the Playboy empire. Let’s just say, it was not as glamorous as they tried to make it look! Kathy and I have both benefitted from Messie Condo’s little book, Nobody Wants Your Sh*t (The Art of Decluttering Before You Die). Seriously, it is the best book on decluttering I have ever read. It’s a quick read, and I warn you: get your garbage bags ready. You’ll need them! (oh yeah, and there is some language – still, worth it!
Wow! What a busy time we are going to have, If you have any questions, feel free to call me at the library. See you Soon!
Carol
